Feeling Stuck in Your Job Search? Here’s How to Get Unstuck
If you’re only applying to jobs online, you’re missing out on a huge part of the hiring market.
You’re staring at your resume. The cursor blinks, daring you to make a move. You’ve opened LinkedIn, Indeed, and every job board under the sun, but instead of feeling inspired, you feel… lost. Overwhelmed. Frustrated.
You’re not alone.
Whether you're pivoting careers, re-entering the workforce, or just trying to find a job that doesn’t drain the life out of you, job searching can be an exhausting, demoralizing process. But here’s the truth: It doesn’t have to be.
If you’re struggling with where to start (or restart), here’s how to move forward with clarity and confidence.
Shift Your Mindset: You Are Not Just a Job Seeker—You Are a Brand
Think of yourself as more than someone looking for a job. You are a professional with a unique blend of skills, experiences, and strengths that bring value to the right company.
Start by asking yourself:
What am I really great at?
What kind of work excites me?
What impact do I want to make?
Your career story is yours to shape. Studies show that professionals who actively cultivate a personal brand have greater career success (Castrillon, 2023). In fact, LinkedIn reports that 81% of recruiters look at candidates' online presence before making hiring decisions (LinkedIn Talent Blog, 2023).
Owning your narrative shifts you from feeling powerless to feeling empowered.
Get Clear on Your Non-Negotiables
Not every opportunity is a good opportunity. Before applying to anything, define your must-haves and deal-breakers.
Consider:
What kind of work environment helps you thrive?
What salary range aligns with your needs and lifestyle?
What kind of leadership and culture do you need to succeed?
Clarity makes decision-making easier—and keeps you from saying "yes" to the wrong job out of desperation.
If you’re not sure where to start, the Harvard Business Review suggests using a Career Values Matrix to help assess which roles truly align with your strengths and goals (HBR, 2022).
Stop Sending the Same Resume to Every Job
Your resume is not a one-size-fits-all document. Tailoring your resume to highlight key skills, achievements, and impact that align with each role can significantly increase your chances of landing interviews.
Use measurable results and impact-driven language.
Match your skills to the job description.
Don’t just list duties—showcase your wins.
According to Jobscan research, candidates who customize their resumes for ATS and job descriptions see up to a 40% increase in interview requests (Jobscan, 2023).

Leverage the Hidden Job Market
If you’re only applying to jobs online, you’re missing out on a huge part of the hiring market.
Most hiring happens through:
Networking and referrals
Internal promotions
Direct outreach and connections (ie: search firms)
If you're only relying on job boards, you're missing a huge portion of the opportunities available. Instead, focus on:
Reconnecting with former colleagues and mentors.
Engaging with industry leaders on LinkedIn.
Joining professional groups and attending events.
A Harvard study found that weak ties—loose connections, rather than close friends—are actually more likely to help you land jobs (HBR, 2023).
Your next opportunity might come from a conversation, not a job board.
Overcome the Confidence Block
Job searching can feel personal, especially after rejection. It’s easy to fall into self-doubt.But research shows that confidence plays a major role in job search success.
Reframe rejection as redirection—it’s not a “no,” it’s a “not yet.”
Surround yourself with people who lift you up.
Work with a coach to develop a strategic plan that plays to your strengths.
You are not your setbacks. The right opportunity is out there, and sometimes, all you need is a fresh perspective and the right strategy.

This is so helpful and exactly what I needed to see. I’ve been reaching out and applying to no avail and as a single mom I NEED something pronto, but with my neurodivergence I can’t work full time and can only do certain types of jobs. As a former journalist and experienced copywriter, I didn’t think it would be is hard to find work within this realm, but damn. It is. My dream is to write for an Autism organization of some sort, like be their content writer for socials, blogs, web, newsletters, emails, etc. I thought I’d be easily accepted and welcomed with open arms because I’m autistic, and a great writer - no-brainer, right? Wrong. I feel I’m facing more barriers than ever and it’s just so frustrating and demoralizing. Thank you for this post. I absolutely love what you stand for.
